Midway Athletics is pleased to announce the 2017 class of inductees to enter the Hall of Fame at the October 6th football game played at Panther Stadium. The induction ceremony will take place at during pregame of the Midway Panther vs Harker Heights football game.
Please be early to the game to help congratulate and welcome them as they are enshrined into the Midway Athletic Hall of Fame.
Brian is being inducted as an Outstanding Baseball Athlete. Brian competed on the varsity level beginning as a freshman in 1983. Brian was voted All District as a sophomore, junior and senior. Furthermore, Brian was Super Cen-Tex Newcomer of the year as a sophomore, Super Cen-Tex Shortstop as a junior and Super Cen-Tex MVP as a senior. Brian was also All-State as a junior and senior.
Throughout his high school career, Brian had 40 career homeruns, 131 RBIs and batted .486 as a sophomore, .568 as a junior and .506 as a senior. Brian was 23-4 as a pitcher with 259 strikeouts and a career ERA of 1.2.
Brian was offered a scholarship to the University of Texas and was selected in the 3rd round of the 1987 MLB draft by the Cincinnati Reds. Brian chose to play professional baseball and signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1987. Brian played professional baseball from 1987-1992. Throughout his professional career, Brian made All-Star teams each year in 1988 Single A, 1989 and 1991 Double A. Brian retired from baseball in 1992.
2009 State Girls’ Basketball Champions
The 2009 team continued the rich winning tradition of girls’ basketball at Midway High School, earning the program’s 7th State Championship! The team, led by Coach Teri Morrison, assisted by Todd Monsey and Shatina Lewis was 35-4 on the year in route to the 4A State Championship. The 2009 team ranked 48th nationally by ESPN averaged 61 points per game. On their way to the state title, they defeated Buda Hays in the state semifinals 67-46 and Mansfield Timberview 50-27 in dominating fashion.
Seven of the student-athletes competed at the collegiate level, 4 at the Division 1 level. Members of the team received numerous individual awards, including Cokie Reed, McDonald’s All American Delisa Gross McDonalds All American Nominee, Cokie Reed and Delisa Gross were TABC and TGCA All State players. With Krissica Harper named as a TGCA All Star.

Coach Kent & Jamie Bachtel
Coach Bachtel and Jamie arrived at Midway in 1983. Shortly after their arrival in 1983, Coach Bachtel assumed the role of Head Football coach for the Midway Panthers in 1986. During his 24 years as head coach, he had a record of 155-104-1. In 1992, the Midway Panthers won their first outright district championship in 30 years. Coach Bachtel and his team went on to make it to the State Semifinals in 1997 and 1999. His team again made a deep run in 2008, making it to the regional quarterfinals. In 2008, Coach was named Super Centex Coach of the Year. During Coach Bachtel’s last two seasons, he had a total record of 21-5.
Coach’s wife Jamie was at his side throughout Kent’s entire career. Often serving as team mom, baking brownies and her world famous sad cake for the teams and staff. After every game win, lose or draw you would look down at the field to see Coach Bachtel and his bride share a kiss and hug.
Upon his retirement in 2009, Kent coached part time with his son, John Bachtel, Head Coach of the Fairfield Eagles; helping them reach the state championship game in 2013.
Coach Bachtel passed away September 8th, 2015 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
